There I was, freckled faced with chubby cheeks, playing with a couple of boys from my class at recess. They started swinging on a tree branch and to prove to them that I was just as strong, I jumped up and grabbed ahold of that branch with all my might. I lasted about two swings of my legs before that limb snapped and I came crashing down into the mulch. Still sitting there, now full of embarrassment, the boys began laughing and yelling "You're too fat!" as they ran to tell the teacher. That was the first time I can remember feeling self-conscious about my weight. I was in the third grade. A nine year old.I played basketball and ran cross country as I got older and continued running throughout most of my time in college. Despite my efforts to stay, what I thought at that time to be "fit," insecurity would find a way to rear its ugly head. After college, working out was as sporadic as getting my teeth cleaned. (Sorry mom!) Not to mention my idea of eating healthy was salad on top of salad during the week and then beers and brownies on the weekends. As I'm binge watching Netflix one night, my friend Jess came to me with the idea that we should try Freight House's first month special. It was exactly what I needed, something to pull me out of my lazy rut! So that next Monday morning, I anxiously drove to the gym. My anxiety slowly started to fade away as we talked to Sean and it was completely gone by the time we started our workout. After that first week, I was hooked. I knew I'd found a true gem of a gym when it was not only owned by an amazing couple, but that also had members who were equally as inviting and motivating. As my first month special was coming to a close, Sean and Kendra were starting their next group of 90 Day Challengers. It was literally a sign from God saying, "JUST DO IT!" (Yes, He used the Nike slogan.) Of course the first things to go through my mind were all the excuses of why I couldn't commit, "I'm going on a cruise two weeks in" "It'll be during Halloween and Thanksgiving and my birthday and Christmas parties!" "Blah, blah, blah…." But with knots in my stomach I signed up anyways and there was no going back. The 90 Day Challenge was just that: a challenge. I won't lie, there were days when I felt completely unmotivated, but I would just remind myself that I am lucky to have an able body and have the opportunity to even go to the gym. Also, having an incredibly inspiring mentor was an absolute blessing! (You know who you are! #KillerKays) I also learned a lot…. I learned that a variation of cardio and lifting weights was what I was missing from my old, boring workouts of killing myself on the treadmill. The "diet" was also new to me. "If It Fits Your Macros" was only something I had heard about but never delved into. Let me tell you, anytime I can fit ice cream into my diet, I'm doing it. Why had I not tried this sooner?! Flexible dieting is the way to go people! As our challenge neared the end, I found myself with new friendships and a healthier body and mind. Feeling strong is now what makes me feel beautiful.
